Overview: 65%: As the Academic Skills Specialist, this person will meet with students who are requesting or who have been referred for individual assistance in building academic success strategies. Through the facilitation of peer meetings, outreach sites, credited courses (Educ 104, Educ 105, Educ 106), and individual meetings, the Academic Skills Specialist assists students with academic preparedness for university-level work-- discussing college success issues such as time management, transition to college, textbook comprehension, test preparation/test-taking skills, note-taking skills, reading or writing comprehension, and campus resource education. 5%: As the Academic Skills Specialist, this person will also work closely with the Tutoring in Math and Science (TIMS) Coordinator, assisting with the intake of new individual math and science tutoring requests. This person will assess student need for additional services during intake meeting and respond accordingly. 30%: As the Mentoring Coordinator, this person will coordinate all aspects of the LEAP mentoring program including mentor recruiting and selection, mentor training, mentee recruiting, mentee selection, mentor and program assessment, course instruction (for mentors, Educ 145/245/345/445, and mentees, Educ104), transition week scheduling and communication, and securing and managing funding. Position Description Detail: 65%: Academic Skills Specialist Meeting with students referred through various retention programs, early alert programs, Leading Edge, Back on Track, and other offices to the Tutoring-Learning Center because of serious academic challenges and/or desire for a smooth transition into college, and provide them with success strategies; set an academic success plan or process in motion; and refer them to additional resources such as TIMS tutoring. Writing Lab, Disability Services, Counseling Center, Career Services or Advising Office if needed Assisting students with transition to UWSP, through workshops, class visits, individual meetings, and/or course Developing and presenting workshops and accredited classes on academic success strategies and campus resources Assisting with tutor training across TLC programs- train tutors on how to equip their learners with effective study skills Publicizing TLC services by distributing information and speaking or presenting to students, faculty members, and groups Conduct program assessment and submit semesterly reports Promoting and supporting the university’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity among the campus community Other duties as assigned 5%: Academic Skills Specialist Intake and check in for individual TIMS tutor request forms Assist the TIMS coordinator with TIMS tutor observations and feedback when needed Assist in the marketing of the TIMS program Promote and support the university’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity among the campus community Other duties as assigned 30% Mentoring Coordinator Recruiting, hiring training observing evaluating and maintaining personal files for mentors while maintaining quality control within the mentoring program Recruit and select mentees who demonstrate fit with the mentoring program Instruct the mentors (Educ 145/245/345/445) Instruct the mentees (Educ 104) Develop and run the pre-semester transition to college week Work with the TLC Director and the University College Dean to secure program funding and to develop alternative budget models Manage program funding Conduct program assessment and submit semesterly reports Promote and support the university’s commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity among the campus community Other duties as assigned Please read complete job description here This is a 12-month, 87.5% Academic Staff annual appointment, exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act. This position is full time during the academic year and half-time during the summer.
