Departmental Overview

The Graduate School of Journalism at U.C. Berkeley is widely regarded as one of the top journalism programs in the United States. The School offers a two-year Masters of Journalism degree to an enrollment of about 110 students at a time, while the journalism minor (currently in summers only) serves another 300 undergraduates. The school's emphasis is on mastering a wide variety of communication techniques while learning the highest standards of responsible and enterprising journalism.

The Senior Director of Student Services is responsible for strategic and operational management of all Student Services for the School of Journalism. This work involves a wide range of duties and responsibilities that influence the culture and day to day life of the School. The incumbent is responsible for operationalizing the curriculum (executing enrollment and communicating curricular changes to students; make significant decisions regarding the student services unit, creates and manages the fellowships and student services unit budget, develops and implements initiatives and supervises staff working in this area. The incumbent provides assistance to the dean, faculty, and students in academic advising, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, the evaluation and awarding of fellowships and block grant funds, student orientation and events, career counseling, and related programs and supervises staff working in these areas.



Develops, interprets, and administers student services programs:

• Advising

• Course Scheduling and Enrollment

• Staffs the Curriculum Committee

• Financial Aid and Fellowships

• Student Life and Diversity and Inclusion

• High Profile Student-Centered Events

Evaluates performance metrics and designs new programs to meet school expectations, developing and directing 3-5 year plans for the school, for these programs. Evaluates the effectiveness of the student services functionality, and makes changes to the program to provide better service to organizational management, faculty, and students. Develops initiatives around diversity equity and inclusion.

As Subject matter expert on all student services related areas, incumbent is the resource for faculty and staff for all topics within scope.


• Provides direction to professional student services advisers and staff on the more complex issues encountered.

Manages and supervises staff on developing strategic initiatives, administering the budget, assessing the needs of the student services unit, innovating new approaches to unit's goals.

Makes decisions on performance, salary actions, hiring decisions and other human resources related issues of managed staff.

• Recognizes issues that have campus impact or future implications and advises the managed employees accordingly.


• Represents the student services unit to the campus community and relevant external constituencies. Participates in campus opportunities for professional development.


• Plans, develops, and administers the student services and fellowship budgets for the organization and monitoring progress and effectiveness of budget, insuring the operations are running smoothly and meeting objectives.

• Submits forecast and budget quarterly and annual budget cycles.

• Oversees monthly audit on spending.

• Manages travel grant fund.

• Provides broad directives to staffing of operational areas within unit.

• Decides which resources will be committed to goals and objectives and how they will be allocated.

• Evaluates school resources that are dedicated to operations and decides management for: equipment care, building maintenance and access, staffing and resources of key events.

Required Qualifications

• Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

• Knowledge of or ability to learn common University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of or ability to learn University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.

• Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.

• Skills in project management and demonstrated social perceptiveness to be communicate effectively with a diverse group of students, staff, and faculty.

• Ability in problem identification, reasoning.

• Ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.

• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
