Monterey County Free Libraries (MCFL) is a public library system whose mission is to bring ideas, inspiration, information, and enjoyment to the community. MCFL was established to provide library services to the diverse communities of Monterey County through a network of 17 branches, three bookmobiles, a virtual branch/website, branchlets, and Library by Mail, along with a variety of diverse programs for all ages and needs.   

The ideal candidate is adaptable, flexible, empathetic, and enthusiastic. They are aware of trends in the library profession and are willing to try new ideas to meet community aspirations and improve library services. They have experience as a supervisor in a library setting. They take initiative and work collaboratively with community partners and colleagues.

The Eligible List established by this recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies on a regular full-time, part-time, or temporary basis for all branches.

Examples of Duties:

THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE Will have a proven track record demonstrating the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Manage a mid to large branch or major work unit
  • Practice, model, and train staff in the delivery of quality public library service
  • Plan, present and supervise children's and adult programs
  • Supervise, train, evaluate, and schedule professional and paraprofessional subordinate staff and library volunteers
  • Interact with the community, including the public, government, education, civic and library advocacy groups; perform library outreach and work on or oversee community needs assessments
  • Oversee branch or work unit facilities, library materials and equipment, request maintenance, repair, or replacement as appropriate
