Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, courteous, and helpful assistance to customers that results in a lasting positive impression of SANDAG and the toll road.
  • Collect and register cash and credit card toll payments for all vehicles driving though the assigned toll lane.
  • Perform basic mathematical calculations to verify amounts tendered, check currency received for counterfeit bills, provide change for payments, and issue a machine printed receipt.
  • Provide information to customers regarding FasTrak; respond to general questions regarding local roads and area attractions. 
  • Perform beginning of day and end of day check in/out procedures; prepare and submit a daily report of toll collections.
  • Assist with the development of new or revised toll collection systems, procedures, and methods of operation; assist with recommending and implementing enhancements to ensure effective systems and services are in place.
  • Participate in meetings with co-workers; provide assistance to senior staff.
  • The job will be performed outdoors in a toll booth that is heated, air conditioned, and equipped with a chair.


Experience and Qualifications

Candidates should possess a high school diploma, or equivalent, and one year of recent experience in a customer service or cashier environment. Key qualifications for these positions include:

  • Experience working in a face-to-face customer service environment
  • Experience collecting money, making change, and processing transactions swiftly and accurately; ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective customer service techniques; experience diffusing and resolving difficult customer interactions is desirable.
  • Familiarity with roads and area attractions within the general vicinity is desirable.
  • Ability to understand basic laws, rules, and regulations pertinent to toll collections and the safety of passengers.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including appropriate use of the English language; Spanish language skills are desirable.
  • The selected candidates must pass a pre-employment criminal background check; periodic background checks will be a condition of ongoing employment.
  • The selected candidates also can anticipate a driving record check upon hire, and approximately annually thereafter. The results of the check may determine whether the selected candidates will be permitted to drive for SANDAG business.


Salary and Benefits

The Toll Plaza Attendant positions have a pay rate of $12.00 to $20.94 per hour; the starting pay rate will depend on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
