The Opportunity: The AFL-CIO Labor Liaison supports all functions of United Way and AFL-CIO partnership and the mutual interests of both organizations by:
Bridging United Way and Labor communities
Fostering strong relationships with labor unions to advance mutual impact goals and ensure successful United Way campaigns
Identifying opportunities for the United Way and labor to collaborate on jointly developed programs that benefit local communities;
Building strategic partnerships with community allies and implementing jointly developed programs around the issues of income, education and health;
The AFL-CIO Labor Liaison is an employee of United Way Bay Area subject to UWBA’s employment and workplace policies. This position is based in Martinez at Contra Costa AFL-CIO Labor Council. What you’ll do: Relationship-Building, Community Engagement and Community Impact
Conduct a program of community services for union members, their families, and others in the community as identified/agreed in the jointly developed annual work plan (including but not limited to information & referral, food pantries and hardship funds).
Work with United Way Community Impact (CI) staff and Central Labor Council leaders to determine where CI goals align with the goals of the local labor movement and develop plans for increasing labor participation to achieve those goals.
Connect union members to essential services and refer members to UWBA programs including 211, SparkPoint, Earn It! Keep It! Save It! etc.
Develop effective relationships with AFL-CIO Central Labor Council leaders and local unions in the jurisdiction covered by United Way .
Collaborate with CLC community engagement staff to build capacity of the CLC to sustain effective relationships with community-based organizations that work in impact areas of mutual interest to the UW and CLC.
Develop labor and community-based coalitions and partnerships and oversee efforts that highlight working family and social justice issues that are of mutual interest to the UW and CLC, give voice to disempowered residents in communities and tackle the root causes of social and economic inequality.
Develop community mapping tools to identify strategic community partners, analyze existing relationships and identify opportunities to build relationships with key community allies.
Identify opportunities to build and foster a strong partnership between the Labor Council and the United Way.
Represent labor across United Way’s departments including community impact, resource development, communications, marketing, and other areas, and develop strategies to clearly demonstrate the value of the labor partnership with United Way.
Organize community service opportunities that are aligned with the UW’s and labor’s mutual impact goals, and recruit volunteers to ensure successful events.
Participate and assist in organizing Labor Council events that are of mutual benefit.
Assist in UWBA workplace giving campaigns, where appropriate and possible, by coordinating with United Way Development staff.
Develop and support joint Labor-Management campaigns by analyzing data and developing strategies based on evaluation of previous results and additional research.
Develop and implement effective engagement and stewardship strategies for accounts to clearly demonstrate the value of the partnership with United Way.
Develop labor (unions, CLCs, and members) participation recognition programs and materials.
Provide best practice examples of corporate, employee, individual and/or special event fundraising approaches.
Develop plans to engage unionized employees within UW corporate partners for better campaigns.
Develop comprehensive fundraising plans that engage unions and employers to ensure successful workplace giving campaigns.
Volunteer Recruitment and Training
Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies that enable UW and the labor movement to achieve Community Impact goals of mutual interest.
Develop and conduct trainings for union members, community partners and United Way staff.
Create and deliver a variety of training curricula to develop union members’ leadership skills, including non-profit board training, advocacy for the common good, and other programs as needed.
Develop, in consultation, with the CLC an annual work plan based on the national AFL-CIO-United Way Model Joint Work Plan;
Participate in United Way meetings, including local United Way staff meetings, and conferences.
Attend CLC and Regional Labor Council meetings, including staff meetings as appropriate.
Make quarterly reports to the CLC and United Way
Participate in education and training programs, conferences and conventions of the AFL-CIO, Labor Council and United Way on topics of mutual interest.
Who You Are: Labor:
Demonstrated experience in the labor movement including mobilizing, volunteer recruitment and training, and leadership development.
Strong understanding of AFL-CIO organizational structures and complex dynamics of local labor movements.
United Way : Demonstrated experience within the United Way system or the equivalent.
Community Organizing and Coalition Building: Demonstrated experience working with a broad array of organizations on issues of social and economic justice, building unity among diverse groups and facilitating meetings.
Planning and Execution:
Ability to develop and execute work plans, training, fundraising, community engagement and coalition-building.
Assess progress on plans and adjust as needed to ensure successful outcomes.
Ability to effectively develop, grow and sustain productive internal and external relationships and partnerships.

It is the goal of our dynamic Development team to increase our number of new donors and deepen the relationships with our current donors. The Corporate Engagement Manager will cultivate, manage and grow an assigned portfolio of accounts, with a focus on corporate and employee engagement. This position will also steward and cultivate leadership level individual donors and prospects from within assigned accounts, and will identify new opportunities to raise funds year-round within and beyond those accounts. The Corporate Engagement Manager will have the ability to work with a broad range of people, have strong fundraising skills, strong communication skills and the ability to interact with high level donors on an individual and group basis. This position will work closely with the Sr. Director of Corporate Engagement to develop and refine strategies for maximizing results and will collaborate with other team members within Development and across departments including the Finance, Marketing, and Community Impact Teams.
This is a professional exempt position reporting to the Senior Director of Corporate Engagement. It is a full time, regular, 37.5 hour per week position. This position is for the United Way Bay Area San Francisco Office.
What you'll do:
Develop and execute corporate engagement and revenue raising strategy for a portfolio of corporate accounts and establish, in cooperation with management, measurable goals and objectives to meet organization goals.
Provide high level, quality customer service by maintaining a positive and proactive relationship to all assigned workplace campaigns and individuals; maintain thorough communication logs in Salesforce.
Cultivate ongoing relationships with corporate account representatives, donors, and prospective donors to identify their philanthropic interests and enhance their knowledge and support of UWBA.
Manage appropriate training/resources, manage timelines, provide direct support to corporate accounts, i.e., speaking engagements, event facilitation, volunteer projects etc. for each account.
Manage on-going relationships with key leadership and donors in each of the assigned accounts.
Accurately forecast, monitor and prepare progress reports on all accounts and individual donor portfolio.
Conduct face to face visits with a portfolio of donors and steward year-round.
Manage volunteers, board members and organization stakeholders who will assist with the identification, cultivation and solicitation of prospects.
Promote and demo the Salesforce Philanthropy cloud platform to existing corporate partners and seek new business; provide support to existing SPC accounts and work internally across teams on year-round engagement.
Proactively seek opportunities to generate new partnerships and sponsorships based on aligning corporate interests, and by maintaining strong communication ties with corporate donors and prospects.
Identify purpose-driven employee engagement opportunities and serve as a resource for companies to strengthen their corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies, talent acquisition and talent retention plans.
Promote and/or collaborate with the Volunteer, Event and/or Affinity Group Teams to provide targeted opportunities for individuals and corporate employee groups to engage directly with UWBA programs and our mission.
Support the Community Engagement team with organizing and executing collaborative volunteer partnerships (traditional and nontraditional, internal and external) by identifying, creating and promoting volunteer engagement activities that align with UWBA’s mission of fighting poverty.
Develop relationships with Bay Area community partners including non-profit agencies and public institutions, to advance UWBA impact agenda and help secure volunteer opportunities for our corporate partners.
Develop partnerships that advance UWBA’s strategies to increase engagement and deepen relationships with individuals, new target audiences, and affiliated organizations throughout the Bay Area and leverage volunteerism to bring new supporters to our organization and to improve our relevancy with current supporters.
Who you are:
3-5 years+ experience direct fundraising preferred.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, and solid relationship management skills at all levels in organization.
Ability to multi-task and manage simultaneous tasks and customer relationships.
Strong donor focus and understanding of how to effectively manage ongoing donor relationships.
Self-motivated, goal oriented, ability to get job done.
Team player who excels at working collaboratively – both listening and actively contributing - as well as independently.
Strong computer skills including above average competency on Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Comfort and knowledge of Internet, experience with Salesforce desirable.
Project management experience desirable.
Other non-profit/philanthropic experience/demonstrated interest desirable.
A California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
