Job Description The Department of Biological Sciences at Northern Arizona University invites applications for a non-tenure track Lecturer position in General Biology to begin in August 2019. The successful applicant will have demonstrated success in teaching large enrollment introductory biology courses, and will be expected to teach multiple sections of our first year biology sequence as well as other lower-division biology courses as needed. These courses support our departmental programs as well as those of other campus units. The successful candidate should be conversant with topics at the levels of cells (e.g., cell structure/function, major pathways, Mendelian and molecular genetics) and organisms (e.g., biodiversity, basic biology of plants and animals, introductory physiology, ecology, evolution). The successful candidate will be expected to teach in collaboration with department faculty and staff and complete, seek out regular professional development around student success, and perform service roles in the Department. Research and other forms of scholarship activity are not an expectation for this position, and release time will not be allocated for them. Minimum Qualifications A conferred Ph.D. in Biological Sciences or a closely related field conferred by August 19, 2019 At least one year experience teaching Introductory Biology at the college level Complete hiring packet Preferred Qualifications Two years' experience in large enrollment introductory lecture courses as the instructor of record. Experience with traditional and non-traditional course delivery including the use of active learning techniques and student centered teaching practices. Experience with use of Learning Management Systems and other online learning platforms. Expertise in best practices related to teaching in STEM, first-year college students, learning strategies and college success skills, resiliency and/or at-risk students. Outstanding communication skills. Experience working and interacting with people from a wide variety of culturally diverse backgrounds. Special Information This is a non-tenure track, non-tenure eligible faculty position in the Department of Biological Sciences. This position is not eligible for sponsorship now or in the future. General Information The Department of Biological Sciences comprises more than 2500 majors in 4 undergraduate degree programs, roughly 50 faculty, and100 MS and PhD students. Background Information Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. Salary $48,000 per academic year Benefits This is a Faculty (FAC) position. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
