POSITION OVERVIEW
We are a stable, $40M nonprofit organization with a proud track record of four consecutive clean audits. We are seeking a foundational General Ledger Accountant who possesses strong, practical fundamentals in basic transactional accounting. Rather than advanced theory, this role requires the precise execution of daily debits, credits, and multi-dimensional coding.
The ideal candidate understands how a chart of accounts functions, accurately tracks revenue and expense rules, and can reliably manage repetitive monthly schedules. This position is a critical safeguard for our clean audit track record. It offers a balanced workload with opportunities to learn complex grant allocations and take on special projects during the second half of the month.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & CORE RESPONSIBILITIES
Daily & Monthly Transactional Accuracy (The Fundamentals)
- Dimension & Chart of Accounts Discipline: Accurately apply multi-dimensional coding (departments, locations, programs, projects, and grants) to every transaction in Sage Intacct.
- Journal Entries: Prepare, double-check, and post standard journal entries with an explicit understanding of basic accounting entries (e.g., recognizing that revenue is a credit balance).
- Credit Card Coding Verification: Audit, verify, and certify employee credit card coding via Certify, ensuring proper documentation is attached before pushing data to the GL.
- Check Processing: Perform remote deposit capture for checks received through donor mail campaigns and match them to the ledger.
Cash Management & Reconciliations
- Bank Reconciliations: Download bank transactions and perform full reconciliations of all bank accounts using the Sage Intacct Cash Management module.
- Consistent Coding: Code recurring bank transactions uniformly every single month to maintain data integrity.
Schedules, Amortization & Growth Tasks
- Prepaid & Fixed Asset Management: Maintain standard monthly schedules, including Prepaid Expenses Amortization (PPD Amortz) and Fixed Assets Depreciation.
- Grant Allocations: Learn and execute monthly shared-cost allocations (rent, phone, software, and consulting) across active state grants.
- Audit Preparation: Maintain neat, organized digital folders of supporting documentation to easily pull schedules for our annual external audits.
Workload Flow & Special Projects
- Manage time effectively to handle a heavy workload through the 15th of each month for the close.
- Proactively utilize post-close downtime (16th through the end of the month) to assist organizational leadership by taking ownership of historical accounting processes, special cleanup projects, and cross-training.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting OR equivalent solid professional experience.
- Proven ability to independently prepare journal entries and balance sheets (candidates will complete a brief, practical fundamentals assessment on-site).
- Experience: Minimum 4–5 years of hands-on accounting experience with a mid-size corporation 501(c)(3).
- Software: Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct OR similar cloud-based ERP software.
- Core Accounting Skills: Absolute clarity on double-entry accounting. Must be able to pass a basic proficiency test on journal entries, debits/credits, and reading a chart of accounts during the interview process.
- Attention to Detail: A self-verifying mindset. Must proofread and balance entries before submitting them to the Accounting Manager for final approval.
