The Position



This is a trainee position for journey level emergency communications dispatchers from other jurisdictions who have gained the skills via training and employment in order to effectively perform dispatching work in the field of emergency communications, with the exception of fire dispatch. Incumbents are responsible for participating in formal classroom training, on–the-job-training, simulation training and directed self-study. Prior to promotion to the police dispatcher classification, incumbents must be able to demonstrate proficiency to operate telephone, use radio and computer equipment to record requests for emergency services, and dispatch police field units; and monitor the status of field units. The ability to work any shift, on any day, and to work overtime is an essential function of the job. Typical shift configurations for experienced employees are four – 10 hour days; employees are not required to report to work on their days off.

To Qualify

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
1. Have knowledge of the proper application of radio communications codes and terms and the use of radio equipment.
2. Have skill in dispatching police and emergency units.
3. Have skill in operating computer terminals and a keyboard to transcribe simultaneous oral communications and/or handwritten copy.
4. Have skill in using street maps and computer mapping systems to locate addresses, streets, block numbers, etc.
5. Have the ability to remember and accurately transcribe spoken information including names, addresses, sequences of letters and
numbers, descriptions and directions.
6. Currently hold, or have held State of Oregon DPSST (Department of Public Safety Standards and Training) certification in
Telecommunications and Emergency Medical Dispatch (or equivalent certification from another state) within the last year.
7. Must pass a comprehensive background investigation.
8. Possess a high school diploma or its equivalent.
9. Be at least 18 years old at time of hire.
10. Proof of typing speed (online test instructions below) of at least 40 Net Words Per Minutes (WPM)

The Recruitment Process

The recruitment process will consist of an evaluation of the applicant's knowledge, skill and abilities as demonstrated in their cover letter, resume and typing test weighted 100%. Only the most qualified candidates passing the cover letter/resume evaluation will be placed on an equally ranked eligible list that will be forwarded to the hiring authorities for employment consideration. Candidates placed on the eligible list will be invited to a Pass/Fail CritiCall Test, Pass/Fail Oral Interviews and a Pass/Fail Employment Reference Check/Background Investigation. A conditional offer of employment is subject to the results of a background investigation, psychological assessment, a drug screen, and a vision/hearing test. Additional evaluation may be required prior to the establishment of the eligible list and/or final selection.

    • The City currently pays the employee's share of the retirement contribution.

Paid Leave
  • 112 hours of vacation each year initially. This accrual will increase over time.
  • Sick leave typically accrues up to a maximim rate of 40 hours per calendar year
