The Sheriff 's Office is comprised of the Administration, Corrections and Enforcement Operation Bureaus. The Sheriff’s Office delivers public safety to the residents of Monterey County by providing 24-hour uniformed patrol, investigations, custody services, court security, and law enforcement support.
The primary responsibility of a Property Technician is to receive, catalogue, store, maintain, control, release, and/or destroy property, evidence, or other items that have been recovered. This position is assigned to the Enforcement Operations Bureau, Forensics Services Unit.
The ideal candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively. The ideal candidate will exercise independent judgment and initiative in managing the property room.
The Eligible List established by this recruitment process may be used to fill current as well as potential future vacancies throughout the Department as they arise.
THE SUCCESS FULL CANDIDATE
Will demonstrate the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Thorough knowledge of: Basic inventory techniques; Modern office equipment, including computer and applicable software programs sufficient to complete required duties.
Working Knowledge of: The organization and functions of a criminal justice agency; Modern record keeping and filing systems associated with receiving and storing inventory; Basic arithmetic calculations and functions.
Skill and Ability to: Interpret and apply applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations; Safely handle heavy items and those containing chemical or biological hazards; Maintain accurate and highly organized records and property/evidence; Testify in Court; Maintain confidentiality; Deal effectively with the public; Understand written and oral instructions; Maintain cooperative relationships with co-workers, members of the public and others contacted through the course of work; respond in a positive manner to supervision and direction; and attend and perform duties on a regular, reliable and consistent basis; Maintain accurate records; Access and operate various automated criminal justice information systems to research the disposition of cases; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Exercise independent judgment and work with minimal supervision; and lift and carry moderately heavy and bulky items.

EXAMPLES OF EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION/TRAINING: Any combination of training, education and/or experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities and required conditions of employment listed above is qualifying. An example of a way these requirements might be acquired is:
Equivalent to graduation from high school; and one year of experience performing inventory and record keeping duties.

Required Conditions of Employment: Successfully pass a thorough background/suitability process, which includes a polygraph examination or a voice stress analysis; Possess a valid California Class C Driver’s License, at time of hire, and maintain a satisfactory driving record; Provide a telephone number or means by which employee can be reached.
The physical and sensory requirements for this classification include, but are not limited to:
Listen and comprehend to communicate face-to-face or on the phone to provide and gather information; Physical strength to lift, pull and carry evidence sometimes weighing up to 50 pounds to and from storage; Ability to stand or sit for periods of time to process evidence on the computer; stoop, reach or bend to process or retrieve evidence; Manual dexterity needed to operate writing utensils or computer keyboard to input and retrieve information.
